This 5-Second Hack Will Give You the Most Unique Lamp Ever (It’s Super Easy)

If there’s one thing that’s almost as important as having lighting for a room, it’s what that lighting looks like. I just moved into a new house, and I’ve spent months looking for the perfect floor lamps, the right overhead lighting, and of course, the perfect table lamp. I’m usually looking for something unique, and if you’re looking for that too, this lamp hack might be just the thing.

The hack comes from Instagram, courtesy of Emily (@le.cultivateur), who used a plant pot to create a custom lamp base. All you need is a lamp with a slim base and a plant pot of your choice. Make sure that the base fits into the pot, and that the lampshade is somewhat proportionate in size.

From there, it’s pretty easy — just put your lamp into your pot or planter! You can trail the wire behind the pot and add some ribbons or streamers for extra flair.

The video uses a heavily textured pot, similar to this one from Anthropologie, which creates visual interest and immediately draws the eye. The interesting thing about this pot is that while it looks like it’s made of fabric from a distance, it’s actually constructed from cement, making it much sturdier than it looks. It also comes in four sizes, so it can accommodate lamps of different sizes.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option, Amazon offers a similar textured pot, though the wide mouth of the opening makes it a little harder to hide the lamp’s true base. This is a time when decor comes in handy — go wild with ribbons, streamers, or anything else you feel like using to cover the space between the lamp and the pot.

Of course, you don’t have to stick to a pot like the one featured in the video — you can use something like this gorgeous black terracotta vase from CB2, or this ceramic vase from Pottery Barn. As long as your base fits the mouth of the planter, pot, or vase, and is roughly as tall, you can make this hack work pretty easily with an almost-new “base” — maybe even one you have at home!
